Chilly temps and cathedral glass...
Chilly start to the day at 33 degrees before sunrise. I'm glad G covered the squash (though I have scant hope they'll make it anyhow, but we will try). Holly and I picked the last of the green tomatoes, a few green beans (which made it into last night's shepherd's pie), a lonely cucumber, and then G and Holly went out later on to pick the small green apples. We are not sure if they are large crabbies or small something else. The tree appeared in the lilac hedge and it's flourishing; the apples are very tart but make awesome applesauce. So, I have two huge bags of those to process soon. And I will! The plan is to pick the other apples this weekend and maybe at least some of the pears. We have pears. We have thousands of pears. If you live close by, come pick some. There's far too many to even begin to imagine.
I need to clip herbs to make herbed butter for the freezer. I have a tiny half-row of carrots to pick-- later. There's no real rush with carrots. The garden, and the warm weather, are winding down.
But it's supposed to be mid-60s today. I have given in; the pellet stove is warming the house this morning, and I have a light sweater on. I must deal with the pile of shoes in the hallway-- some need to get put away (sandals, alas), and some need to be thrown away. I hold onto shoes and sneakers far too long, and my poor feet tell me I'm an idiot over and over again.
Time to start buttoning up the house, I guess. I'm not putting up thermal curtains yet. I hate to shut out the light. But soon enough, I guess. I'll target the long weekend in October for that project. Three days in a row means that I can get some house project done, not just routine cleaning and hoping that no one notices the dust.
This evening, G and I are going to the movie theatre to see a special showing of a documentary about Gothic cathedrals called Heaven in Stone and Glass. Our church has arranged it, so the film is at 5pm, so the theatre can still show whatever is playing at the normal time of 7pm. It's open to the public, too, if you want to come. We'll have a later dinner, but that's okay. There's leftovers from last night, and I hope I can secure a rotisserie chicken, too, so we have options. I will not be starting to cook at 6:30 or 7:00.
I hope you have a lovely day. Take it as slowly as you can. The light is waning, eh? Keep safe.
