It's getting hot in a lot of ways...
It's humid and overcast, but we did not get hit with thunderstorms last night. I am glad I watered the garden boxes. I may do it again today. Holly is enjoying the pool time, and I am pleased that she is doing so well with her swimming. Most of all, I can sit on the deck and supervise, if I've a mind to. That's worth a lot.
Today, it's expected to be 90 and that means slowing down. Holly has swim lessons, but other than that, I haven't got a lot on the agenda. I may fold laundry.
So, if you watched/heard about the Red Sox game last night, you'll have an opinion about Contreras' ejection for the second night in a row. On Monday, he was tossed for "insulting" an ump (which was purely subjective and stupid on the ump's part). Last night, there was a benches-and-bullpen-clearing confrontation after the Nationals' pitcher struck Contreras out and said, "sit down, boy." And while Contreras did stride out purposefully toward the mound, and yes, threw his helmet, why didn't the pitcher in question get tossed out as well?
Racism is alive and well, I see.
We see that with the split decision on the Supreme Court, too. The issue of birthright citizenship has been settled law-- in the Constitution-- and yet here we are. I'm glad it did not get overturned; enough has been done to damage rights and our understanding of what the tripartite checks and balances form of government is supposed to do in the last decade or so. It seems that the Court is "originalist" when it suits them, but in his dissent, Thomas was interpreting the law with a whole lot of assumption and latitude, at least according to Justice Jackson. It's disturbing, to say the least.
I'm not a Constitutional scholar, but I paid attention in class. And I read for information and understanding, all to make sure I'm not spouting bonkers ideas. And frankly, there's a whole lot of stuff that is on the docket that should not be. Enough "settled law" has been shredded, and there is a movement to unsettle even more. Our tax dollars are spent in litigation more than in helping people survive. Any privileged group of people asserting that they are untouchable, and a court that supports this mistaken idea, is dangerous for all of us.
That said, stay cool if you can. Be safe, keep the faith, and hug people.
