Binge-watching: Big Mistakes is worth your time

Okay, full disclosure, I like binge-watching shows. This week, I watched all of the second season of Running Point (delightful, not at all challenging to watch) and all of the short series Big Mistakes on Netflix. The second one, Big Mistakes, was a mind-bending dark comedy, and truly was something I couldn't not finish quickly. The eight 30-minute episode rocketed by-- the situation is insane, the casting is perfect, and the dark humor is awesome. It stars Dan Levy as a somewhat closeted gay pastor of a pretty conservative church, his school-teacher sister who is a failed actress and who is a "lost soul" type, his controlling mother (played wonderfully by Laurie Metcalf), and several other fine actors. It was surprising to see Elizabeth Perkins in a slightly jarring role; her character is manipulative, privileged, and often harsh. (I recall her best as the mom in the 90's version of Miracle on 34th Street.) This is not a show that children need to be around --language, sex, violence-- but for adults, it's a great way to blow off four hours. The plot starts out with family dynamics that are intentionally awkward, gets even more complicated, involves mobsters, a run for mayor, and a series of kidnappings... I can't even begin to sort it out for you. Just click on the link-- you'll see.

This is one way I like to spend vacation time-- I don't have to go to bed so early, and I can watch what I want. With Holly here all day, it's harder to carve out "me time," especially when it comes to watching anything on TV or reading quietly. She and I did watch the animated Peter Pan yesterday-- she loved it. It was always one of my favorites, too, so that was nice.

Today, it's raining (and we actually could use some), so we won't be outdoors. I'm sure she's going to make me do some art project stuff, or read books, or play her new pirate game (it is actually a lot of fun). And the doggo has a vet appointment, so G will be heading out with her this morning. The plan is to empty and sort G's side of the closet. That will not take that long, at least the sorting part. The dispersing of piles will take more time.

And I'll have to figure out another show to binge-watch. You might counter with, why are you not reading at night, then? Answer: my eyes and my brain are too tired. So, I'll find something to amuse myself with. Maybe a movie?

Have a good day, friends. Keep your circle tight, share the love, and hold on to the faith.
