Christmas tree removal postponed, hibernation, and saying "no" for one's own good--

It's a cold start to the day, as predicted. I'm in no hurry to get going, but there are groceries and other errands that are waiting for me. So, coffee and fuzzy slippers it is.

The Christmas tree is still taking up water, so I am loathe to take it out of the house. It's still pretty! And it is still the Christmas season. Some would say until Epiphany (which is either Sunday or Monday), but others would say it goes on even longer. I'm willing to split the difference and take it down next weekend. I have a writing day coming up on Saturday, but that will be done by mid-afternoon, so I can take the ornaments off it between Friday when I get home and Saturday when I am done online. Geoff will haul the shrubbery out when he gets a minute. Then, it'll be a quick vacuuming and restoring some order to the living room. Maybe I'll order in a pizza and make it festive.

At any rate, the temperatures and the snowishness and the blinking tree lights are still seasonal. I don't mind. The bustle of the actual holiday week leaves me tired, and it's nice to relax and sort of enjoy the afterglow. I actually went to bed at 9:30 last night, and slept pretty well until 6:15 this morning. Unheard of.

I saw a video on NPR yesterday about whether humans can hibernate. It's not possible at this point, but with the big push for further space exploration, scientists are really trying to figure out how to put a human in stasis for years. I can only imagine that the rate of bone and muscle loss would make it impossible to recover from, but what do I know? I usually only sleep in two hour increments, hoping to manage 6 or 7 hours. Instead of hibernating (which has an emotional allure, honestly), I would love to figure out how to reduce busy-ness when it's cold. I would not mind remote teaching when the temps get ridiculous, or when it's dangerously slippery/snowy/icy. Alas, that is not an accommodation some conservative lawmakers would approve, so we fight the elements, only to find out that some parents keep their kids home due to the weather conditions. Figures, eh?

That all said, I don't have a busy weekend ahead, other than the routine errands and some mundane house chores. Taking down the tree can wait, and that takes a project right off the list. I'm getting some practice in telling myself "no" lately, and I think it'll be good for me.

I don't mind slowing things down, as long as I just don't stop!

Take care,

C
