The signs are there-- we can't ignore them

I've been avoiding digging into the national disaster that the GOP is perpetrating, but here we are. After this past weekend's visit at Mar-a-Lago from one of the most dangerous dictators on the planet (Orban, from Hungary), I'm more convinced than ever that we are now entering a period of time that will be noted in the history books. 

IF we are allowed to talk about it.

IF we can record it objectively.

It's not just about women's rights, or fair pay, or clean air and water. It's not about educational philosophies. We are, I think, at a very scary point: democracy vs. authoritarianism.

NO, it won't just go away, and we can't dismiss it as "those crazies over there"-- to ignore the extremism is to allow it to grow like a toxic fungus in the dark. 

I don't know how this will end; I'd like to think that cooler heads would prevail, that intelligent people will have learned from history, that this situation scares other people as much as it does me-- but I don't know that. The MAGA extremists have pushed out over 60 officials and staffers at the RNC and replaced them with loyalists. The House of Representatives is hamstrung by a Speaker who will not bring anything to a vote that he's been told not to by ONE PRIVATE CITIZEN, a mere candidate. 

Our system is not perfect, to be sure, and this current situation is showing in stark clarity where the flaws are-- they were always there, but sane people did not expect this kind of insidious loop-hole exploitation. 

I don't have an answer. Vote, if we are allowed to. In Haiti, when the prime minister announced that elections were suspended for at least a year, the country blew up, and this was just in the last couple of weeks. They are suffering mob/gang rule at the moment. We don't need that kind of situation here, and we are a much larger country, but I can no long discount the possibility of a major insurrection like that happening here. "January 6" was a dress rehearsal.

Pray for an answer.

Keep good thoughts, please...

If you've been following along the blog this summer, then you probably already know that today, G has surgery on his foot to (we pray) correct the ongoing injury so that it will finally heal. If you are a praying person, please keep him in yours. It has been a very long summer of "hurry up and wait" and he's anxious and growly, and he wants to get back to doing. To get back to work. To stop sitting and thinking about all of it.  I'll be online in my writing conference (isn't it always the way, things have to collide like this?), but since it's day surgery, I should have an update early on. Thank God for Meg, as she is running point on the medical side of things.  I hope I have good news to share tomorrow.  C

More prayers-- there's so much to pray for--

Hey folks, things are unsettled --even more than they have been-- and your prayers, good thoughts, and positive vibes are needed and welcome. Geoff continues to heal (we hope), but that road is rocky and uncertain. He's pretty much out of commission for the foreseeable future, even though he *thinks* he can do more than he is supposed to. Crutches are a pain, but are critically necessary. Thus, he has next to no practical mobility. Tim is back in hospital in Boston, and they will be trying to ascertain the source of the fever he's running and has been for a couple of days now. I have zero idea what is up, but we pray it's not another huge hurdle. Meg is doing her best, but it ain't easy. She's headed to Boston in a few hours, and we hope she'll be able to come home in a few days. She is once again not able to get to go to work, so help is always appreciated.
